Zambia has 73 different tribes and many of them have colorful cultural festivals. If you are lucky enough to find them genuine occasions, where ceremonies are preformed for the benefit of the local people, not for tourists to witness their singing, drumming dancing and ceremony is unique and memorable experience.

There are over 30 ceremonies to be enjoyed, few of which are described here that reflect the rich cultural heritage of Zambia.

Kumboka ceremony (April)

This is the most famous of the ceremonies and takes place in western province when the barotse plains flood, the precise date is decided upon by the Litunga (the Lozi Chief depending on the river its origin dates back centuries, when the Litunga established his headquarters at Lealui, which he soon discovered became submerged when the river rose during the raison. This evaluation is what is today celebrated with great pomp and splendour every year. The journey takes most of the day and the entire village in a flotilla of canoes, headed by the royal barge, finally arrives at Limulunga, further up the Zambezi River, where a huge crowd celebrates with traditional dancing and singing

Likumbi lya Mize (august)

This ceremony takes place annually on the last Saturday of august at Mize, the official palace of senior chief ndungu, about seven kilometers west of Zambezi boma in the north western province.

People of the luvale tribe gather to celebrate their cultural heritage, bringing displays of all types of handicrafts and spicing the event with traditional singing and dancing. The dancers wear elaborate and colorful costumes popularly known at the ‘Likishi’

Shimunega (Sept/October)

Held on a weekend of the full moon this ceremony, held by the Ba-Ila tribe at Maala on the Kafue Flats in the central province, expresses the people’s devotion to their divine ancestors.

The N’cwala (February)

This is thankgiving ceremony held on the last weekend on February, by the ngoni at Mutenguleni Village, in the Eastern Province. Chief Mpezeni, the Ngoni Chief, taste the first fresh produce of the year, a celebration marked by tribal dances and much feasting.
